Altitude – Precision and Heritage in Maritime Instruments

Innovation from the French Franche-Comté

Altitude is a renowned brand in barometers, ship's clocks, and meteorological instruments. Its origins lie in Morteau , a town in the French region of Franche-Comté , which was once a major center for microtechnology.

Together with Barostar , also based in Morteau, Altitude has played an important role in the development of high-quality weather instruments.

A rich history in precision engineering

  • Barostar started in 1939 as a watch manufacturer and developed its own barometer movements in the 1950s.

  • Altitude was founded in 1955 and launched the well-known MECA barometer movement in the 1970s.

  • From the 1980s onwards, Barostar shifted its focus to meteorological equipment.

In the 1990s and 2000s, important acquisitions followed:

  • 1992 – Altitude takes over the Dutch VION

  • 1999 – Acquisition of Barostar

  • 2000 – Altitude acquires the German top brand Schatz 1881
