What is a barometer?

A barometer measures air pressure and provides insight into the expected weather.

• Rising air pressure: better weather, approaching high-pressure area

• Falling air pressure: worse weather, approaching low-pressure area or depression

How does a barometer work?

• Summer: high air pressure = sunny and warm weather

• Winter: high air pressure = sunny and cold weather

• Normal air pressure in the Netherlands: 1000–1020 millibar

Because the air pressure inside and outside is almost identical, the barometer can be easily mounted indoors.
