The Drenthe flag

The province of Drenthe was the first in the Netherlands to have its own flag: it was the first province to fly its own official flag. The flag featured red and white, a reference to the traditional Saxon colors.

Besides two red stripes, the flag features a black castle, a reference to the famous Coevorden Castle. For a long time, the province was governed from this castle. On both the left and right sides of the castle are three red stars. The six stars symbolize the so-called "dingspellen" (deed games) of Drenthe: the areas of Zuidenveld, Oostermoer, Noordenveld, Rolde, Beilen, and Diever together form the province's territory. The stars also refer to the Star of Bethlehem.
