The province of Drenthe had a scoop in the Netherlands with its own flag: it was the first province to fly its own official flag. It became a pennant with the colors red and white, which refer to the traditional Saxon colors.

In addition to two red stripes, we find a black castle on the flag, which refers to the famous Coevorden castle. For a long time the province was governed from this castle. On both the left and right sides of the castle we find three red stars. The total of 6 stars symbolize the so-called 'thing games' of Drenthe: the areas Zuidenveld, Oostermoer, Noordenveld, Rolde, Beilen and Diever together form the territory of the province. The stars also refer to the Star of Bethlehem.
