The diagonally striped pennant with the seven pompeblêden (pompe leaves) only appeared in the last quarter of the 19th century century, but the first reference to the current design can already be found in documentation from the year 1085.

The seven pompe leaves on the Friesland pennant represent the administrative units that together make up the province of Friesland.

Some sources claim that exactly seven of these units never existed in Friesland; others claim that it concerns the countries of West Friesland, Westergo, Oostergo, Hunzingo, Fivelingo, Emsingo and Jeverland.
