The Limburg flag

The Limburg flag features a proud red lion on the front side, crowned and with a double tail. The lion refers to the old Duchy of Limburg. Strangely enough, the territory of the old Duchy of Limburg hardly coincides with the current territory of the province of Limburg: yet the lion has remained a powerful symbol for the Limburgers.

The colors of the flag are taken from the Limburg coat of arms: in addition to a red lion, we also see the colors white, blue and yellow in the background of the flag. The blue stripe in the background is narrower than the other two stripes, and is said to symbolize the iconic River Maas, which flows through the entire province.
