The Brabant pennant
The pennant of North Brabant is one with a rich history. The characteristic checkered pennant was first used in the Middle Ages, but was used from the 18th century onwards century temporarily not used. Only since 1959 has the pennant with the red-white checkerboard pattern been the official pennant of North Brabant.
As far as we know, the colors in the North Brabant pennant do not symbolize anything typically Brabant. We do see red and white appear more often in Brabant flags and pennants: these colors have been widely used since the Middle Ages, especially in shipping. We also see the colors, for example, in the flag of Antwerp, the Belgian southern neighbors of North Brabant.
